Metropolis is a project I worked on at Artists in Motion with fellow freelance motion designer Ted Adair. It was for an event celebrating Abu Dhabi National Day. It played on a series of LED screens as a backdrop for a live performance. We did the 3D in Cinema 4D and rendered with Redshift. All the compositing was done in After Effects.
Below is a few stills showing a breakdown of the comp. It was a three minute 4K render from Cinema 4D and 6K output from After Effects so we had to save as much render time as possible. We ended up splitting out the lit up versions of the buildings in to a separate render so we could control the timings of the transitions in After Effects.
We also decided not to use global illumination or atmospherics in Redshift as it would blow out the render times. We ended up adding haze using a combination of the depth and position passes in AE.
The particles were all created with X-Particles and were separated out in to individual projects.
